Freeing Freedom:

A Survivor Justice Worker Retreat

Survivor Society is bringing together 20 Black people from across the country—organizers, activists, direct service providers, communication gurus, volunteers,  political strategists, and more—to rest, rejuvenate, connect, and deliberate on ways to build a vibrant multi-sectoral  survivor justice movement that can permeate the broader Black liberation movement ecosystem.

Guiding Questions

What is the vision for the U.S based Black Liberation movement taking up the issue of survivor justice?  What would it take to get to this vision?

Guiding Questions

The fight for women’s rights was heralded as a “revolution within the Revolution” by Fidel Castro. What can we learn from Cuba’s revolutionary project about what it takes to sustain a campaign against sexual and gender based violence?

What is the program? What can I expect?

You can expect a mixture of  wellness activations, political discussions, and enough space for rest and relaxation. This is not a "hardcore space" where we will meet for 8-10 hours straight. We will be out and about in cuba- meeting Black feminists, artists, doctors and Survivor Justice workers who are pushing the boundaries of revolution within the country.  A lot of the work happens in-between time- in organic conversations, through activities that engage in the body and work, and through rest. You should expect us to uphold that throughout the agenda.

Can I come?

Unfortunately, we only have limited capacity on this trip and so if you didn’t receive an invite, we can not invite you. After Cuba  will be hosting Survivor Society Suppers throughout the country to bring together more Black folks in fun ways to keep the conversation going and increase connections amongst folks who care about ending sexual violence. We would love to break bread with you. Pease let us know if you are interested by filling out the contact form.

When and where is the retreat?

The Freeing Freedom: A Survivor Justice Worker Retreat will be held in Havana, Cuba from  August 22–27, 2024

Who is Global Academics?

We are partnering with Global Academics to provide an immersive and in-depth tour of  Black Feminist resistance in Cuba. Global Academics mission is to specialize in pre-organized groups who seek globalizing experiences and more.  The crew is led by Dr. Siri Brown who has over 20 years of teaching experience as a tenured faculty member in African American Studies at Merritt College, and part time in Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley.

What is the cost of the trip?

This trip is free in part due to the generous donations from values aligned foundations. We would like for there to be little to no cost-related barriers for you to attend. As such, we will cover your flights, housing, meals, and ground transportation while in Cuba.

Who will be there?

The Retreat will bring together 20 people —organizers, activists, direct service providers, communication gurus, volunteers,  political strategists, and more—to strategize on building a vibrant survivor justice movement that can permeate the broader Black liberation movement ecosystem.  What unites us is that we all have a:

  1. Commitment to Survivor and Gender Justice, as well as, Black Liberation

  2. Committed to an organization (non profit, collective, study group, etc)

  3. Have a longing for movement organizations to be different

  4. Opening to conversations that include healing and transformation
